On Sunday 13th of April 2025, Defense Research Development Organisation(DRDO) India tested successfully the trials of Directed Energy Weapon system(DEWS), experimented publically and joined the elite group of countries having DEWs after United States, Russia and China.
“India joined the elite group of DEWS, achieved the star war’s capability , working on high energy weapon system like high energy microwaves, Electromagnetic and other Energy Directed Weapon system” says Dr Samir V Kamat (DRDO Chairman).

DRDO tested a 30Kw laser directed energy weapon(LaWS) code named DEWs Mark-II Alpha , and the test took place at the National Open Air Range in Kural, Andra Pradesh . In a video photage shared by the DRDO, it is shown that the weapon system successfully hits the targeted drones and specifically the fixed wing drones in mid air, the demonstration has shown the precision strike capability and sophistication of weapon system , high energy powered laser system rating upto 30 kw (3000watts) with the range of 5 km for targeting any object in Air.
The system uses a beam focusing and automated kill assessment technology, and it can target drones,drone sworms ,fixed wings drones , upcoming missiles and any other aerial object, and it can be mounted on a mobile platform

Thus providing more facility and proved it’s lethality during the live test trials. India showed it’s capability of targeting the targets as fast as speed of lightning capability, and can destroy the objects with the blink of a human eye.
The DEWs fast targeting capability, detecting enemy survilliance sensors, drones and antennas detection and engaging targets within short interval time of mini seconds , once the target locked by it’s electro-optical system, the weapon ensures the precision strike with zero ammunition cost and minimizes collateral damage .

The DEWs is an ideal option for defending the skies without any delayed missile defence system (MDS) for it’s low cost, instant responses, effective precised targeting system and long term sustainability, the DEWs are good and powerful alternatives of traditional kinetic defence systems .The traditional kinetic defence systems for their expensiveness , mobility issues,for their deployment period, delayed launcing systems and specifically for their COOL-OFF PERIOD (after some time of using the traditional type of anti-drone systems, it needed some time for break, so after that it can be used again for destroying the targeted objects), without any risk of over-heating, DEWS can deliver aerial defence for long-term without taking any kind of COOL-off period of break, makes it a more reliable system of defence.

Now working on the 3rd strike capability through various defence spendings in the name of space programmes and testing of DEWs created serious security threats to the other states not only regional but also at the global stage.India’s testing of DEWs sent a clear message of it’s growing ambitions towards regional power militarized & weaponized hegemonic dominancy, strengthening muscles in high-tech defence competition.In that shadow of strategic and defence necessities it is continuously developing weapons of high tech and creating threats and competition among South Asian countries.
The arms race in South Asian states is undergoing in various defensive and offensive weapon systems, like the missile defence system, lndia purchased S-4oo from Russia and deployed it’s batteries on both neighbouring countries,4 batteries on Pakistan’s boder and 3 on the Chinese side, Now Braak-8 MDs (missile defence system) was delivered from Israel and it will be deployed soon on these borders. On the other hand Stealth race is on it’s way as India is offered SU-57 FELON (5th Generation, Stealth fighter jet Manufactured by SUKHOI) contract from Russian Federation to develop and manufacture in India (as India already inducted Sukhoi SU-27 and Su-30 MKI in it’s Air force fleet) and Trump offered 5th generation Stealth, Joint strike fighter (JSF), F-35 programme of multi-national contract (manufactured by LOCKHEED MARTIN ) in recent visit to Modi.
As Indian navy acquires naval strength, with induction of Air craft carriers and Nuclear submarines in it’s naval fleet.

The security dilema, imbalance of power between India and Pakistan after the successfully testing of DEWs , has started a new arms race between neighbouring countries. Thus India is officially entering in the Sci-fi style of warfare is creating more serious threat to the small powers and other states of the South Asia.
