RAWALPINDI – Lt-Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed violated the Army Act not only during service but also after his retirement, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday.

Lt-Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, who is the ISPR director general, told a press conference that the Pakistan Army was a national institution and had no political agenda.

“The army is neither against any political party nor favors any other,” he made it clear.

According to Chaudhry, the military has a vigorous accountability mechanism which comes into action whenever an individual pursues personal or specific agenda.

“The Pakistan Army believes in self-accountability,” the military’s media wing head said.

Explaining the background, he said an application was filed against the former ISI chief in the Top City case which triggered an inquiry in April this year. The probe, he added, revealed that Faiz was involved in activities in violation of the Army Act.

In reply to a question, he said Faiz acted in this manner to forward the particular agenda of a political personality – a clear reference to Imran Khan, the incarcerated PTI founding chief who was in power during that period.

IMRAN AND MILITARY COURT

The PTI has started clamoring about the possibility of Imran facing trial in a military court and one of the journalists sought his comments on this issue.

Chaudhry said the matter was sub-judice, making the question premature. However, he made it clear that any person and group of persons influencing an individual falling under the Army Act Act for his personal interests or agenda would face legal consequences under the given law.

It is worth noting that Imran earlier this week moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to get orders against his possible trial under the Army Act.

But the reasoning given to plead his case is quite self-explaining. The petition mentions the arrest of an officer without naming Faiz and says there is a possibility of he being used as an approver against him. One wonders how and why he made this prediction if the two are not connected and Imran isn’t involved in planning the violence perpetrated by the PTI supporters on May 9 and 10.

One mustn’t forget the fact that Imran has been using technicalities to prolong trial in different cases.

EVERY INSTITUTION SHOULD FOR SELF-ACCOUNTABILITY

While discussing how the military’s internal system comes into action as cited the case of Faiz, he also called for other national institutions also replicating the process.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

As the ISPR DG answered different questions covering a wide range of issues, he also dwelt upon the need for overhauling the criminal justice system.

He said Pakistan urgently needed strengthening the criminal justice system so that the nexus between terrorists and criminals could be busted.

TERRORISM ON THE RISE SINCE KABUL TAKEOVER

The ISPR chief mentioned in detail how the military has been acting against terrorist organizations and sacrificing lives to achieve the goal.

He said terrorism was on the rise in Pakistan after the Afghan Taliban again came into power in 2021 and noted that a bogus narrative was being developed for justified terror acts in Balochistan.

But Chaudhry also noted that sense of deprivation was prevalent in the province.

When asked about the rise in terrorism despite the ongoing operations and martyrdom of a large of number of soldiers, he said there was no no-go area in the country. Thousands of square kilometers of area had been cleared, he added.

About the Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, he said the people and other institutions would fight against terrorism while the military was going to fight against terrorism.

Chaudhry also said that the terrorists had no connection with Islam and Balochistan, as he cited killings of innocent people in terror attacks.
