Rising Violence and Regional Tensions, Pakistan’s Security Forces Face Record Casualties in 2024. Pakistan suffered a devastating blow to its security forces in 2024, with the year registering a tragically high death toll for both civilian and military personnel, exceeding the casualties of any single year in the previous decade, a grim indication of the escalating challenges to national security.

In 2024, Pakistan witnessed its highest death toll in nine years, with 2,546 fatalities, marking a 66% increase from 2023.

According to an Islamabad-based “Center for Research and Security Studies” (CRSS), a total of 444 terrorist attacks were reported across the country, claiming the lives of at least 685 security personnel. The toll on civilians was equally alarming. In total, 1,612 people, including members of the security forces, lost their lives in these incidents.

According to the CRSS report, a total of 2,546 people lost their lives in hundreds of violent incidents across Pakistan in 2024. This grim figure includes civilians, security forces, and militants from various groups.

The report also highlights that 934 militants were killed during the year, but the combined civilian and security forces’ casualties were 73 percent higher than those of the militants, underscoring the disproportionate impact on Pakistan’s population.

Pakistan recorded its highest death toll in nine years in 2024, with the total number of fatalities soaring 66% compared to 2023. An average of nearly seven lives were lost daily, with November marking the deadliest month in the country’s history.

The violence hit the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) the hardest, claiming 1,616 lives and making it the deadliest region in terms of human casualties. Balochistan followed, with 782 lives lost during the year, reflecting the widespread impact of the ongoing violence across Pakistan.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded the highest casualties, claiming 1,616 lives, followed by 782 fatalities in Balochistan.

These fatalities occurred during terrorist attacks or as a result of 1,166 counter-terrorism operations conducted throughout the year. The staggering death toll underscores the severe challenges faced by the country in maintaining security and combating militancy.

CRSS figures reflect a staggering increase of over 66 percent in violent incidents compared to the previous year. In 2023, the death toll stood at 1,533, but this surged to 2,546 in 2024, highlighting the escalating security challenges faced by Pakistan.

In 2024, security forces faced an uninviting resurgence in terror-related violence, enduring 444 attacks and 685 fatalities—the highest figures recorded in a decade. This marked a stark increase compared to 2015, when 298 attacks resulted in 415 fatalities, and approached the alarming levels of 2014, which witnessed 543 attacks and 781 fatalities.

From 2015 to 2020, a steady decline in both the frequency of attacks and casualties brought some measure of relief. However, this downward trend was disrupted in 2021, as incidents of violence began to rise once again. The escalation has persisted each year since, culminating in the concerning statistics of the current period.

This data comes at a critical time as Pakistan faces multiple challenges, including political instability and economic crises, compounding its fight against terrorism. The report provides an opportunity to explore broader implications for regional security, especially in the context of developments in Afghanistan.

Pakistan continues to urge the Taliban to act against the TTP, while reiterating its commitment to peaceful dialogue and regional stability.

Islamabad has long accused Afghanistan of harboring terrorist groups that plan attacks on Afghan soil and execute them within Pakistan, adding a complex layer to the ongoing security dynamics in the region.

The war of words between the two neighboring countries has intensified amid regional security crises, including the Israel-Hamas war, Iran’s growing involvement in conflicts, and ongoing instability in Syria. Tensions have further escalated following recent Pakistan Air Force airstrikes on terrorist hideouts in Afghanistan, straining already fragile diplomatic ties.

Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi warned Pakistan against underestimating Afghanistan. “If Pakistan considers Afghanistan inferior, it should learn from history and reflect on the fate of the Soviet Union, the United States, and NATO,” he stated.

However, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s desire for amicable relations with Afghanistan at a federal cabinet meeting on last Friday.

However, he emphasized that the Afghan government must act decisively against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). “The TTP must be stopped from killing innocent Pakistanis. This is a red line for us. Their activities, when orchestrated from Afghan soil, are unacceptable,” Sharif asserted.

Sharif also highlighted that the Pakistan Air Force’s operations underscore the country’s commitment to combating terrorism and protecting its citizens. He further stressed that Pakistan is determined to safeguard its sovereignty and will take all necessary measures to uphold its territorial integrity.

It is documented that Pakistan, as a responsible member of the international community, has consistently emphasized the importance of resolving disputes with Afghanistan through peaceful dialogue.

Rising violence, political instability, and economic crises compound Pakistan’s fight against terrorism and strain its relations with Afghanistan.

Recognizing the significance of diplomatic channels, Pakistan has made numerous efforts to engage in constructive discussions with the Taliban government. However, despite these diplomatic overtures, the Taliban government has failed to exhibit a sufficient level of seriousness in responding to Pakistan’s attempts at dialogue.

This lack of commitment from the Taliban has hindered progress in resolving the longstanding issues between the two countries. Pakistan remains committed to pursuing peaceful solutions and urges the Taliban government to demonstrate a genuine willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue for the betterment of both nations.
